While testing an experimental star-ship over the earth, three scientists and two NASA pilots were suddenly exposed to cosmic radiation. They regained consciousness, and discovered that unique powers had been bestowed upon each of them. Reed Richards, Susan Richards, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm were no longer mere mortals, they had become the Fantastic Four.
Since their debut in 1961, the Fantastic Four have served as Marvel's premier super-hero team. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby partnered to create the super-powered family, complete with human foibles and squabbles. The Fantastic Four were instrumental in the shift to more 'human' storytelling, but their adventures were always outlandish and incredible, and their villains are amongst the most enormous and powerful characters conceived.
